MIA
Sorry for the lack of content lately, folks. It is because I haven’t been doing any work at all.
About a month ago, there was a big rainstorm here in the Pacific Northwest. You may remember it, it was in all the papers. It was such a bad storm that I-5 flooded for about twenty miles and nobody could go from Portland to Seattle for four days.
Anyhow, it was during that storm that somebody at the building that houses my studio decided to redo the roof. So, during that rainstorm, there were damp, unhappy men on the roof of the building, tearing off the asphalt and tarpaper and throwing it into a truck parked directly in front of my office door.
Much to everyone’s surprise, the building flooded. Those of us in my studio were incredibly lucky; the water just came down the walls and got under the floorboards, requiring new flooring and some repair work on the walls. None of my things were damaged (much to my relief; I had every single Jonny Crossbones page on the floor leaning against the wall.) In some of the other studios in the building had water pouring out of all the light fixtures, destroying art and furniture willy-nilly.
The insurance company required a bit of convincing before they’d agree to pay for repairs, and now they’re looking for a contractor, and the end result is that my studio doesn’t have a floor and probably won’t for another few weeks.
At first it didn’t look like it was going to get in my way too much. I spent about two weeks visiting my family in Massachusetts for Christmas and expected the floor to be replaced by then. This hasn’t happened. I also just moved into a house that my rollickin’ roomie Jon Siruno bought (and is magnanimously allowing me to live in in exchange for money) and, thinking that I had a studio to work in, I organized my room in such a way that there isn’t any place to put a drafting table. We do have a spare room, but until yesterday Jon’s family was visiting and sleeping in there. Now we’ve got that set up as a backup studio, I’ll be getting back to work on Monday, after not getting any drawing done for about a month.
I hope I still remember how to draw.

Man I feel you! I’m currently being bitched at by my wife because I turned our whole living room into a sorting area for my art supplies I’ve had over the last 15 years. I moved my drafting table and storage stuff out into a corner of the living room so I can get some work done! I just wanted to let you know that I read vol. 3 and wow, nicely done, but I’m a bit upset at the ending which you can figure out why. Will there be any more Middleman books?
Hey Leslie, nice to know you are fine and that the flood didn’t make major damages to you.
What gets me is the insurance company required a ‘bit of convincing’. Isn’t that the ENTIRE REASON THAT YOU PAY THEM MONEY?
Happy it worked out as well as it did. I need to have some Jonny Crossbones on my shelf. My TinTins need a companion.
Hunter: sorry about your predicament. My wife is also an artist, so we no conflicts for us (as long as our studios are on different floors).
When you are talking about a house your rollickin’ roomie Jon Siruno bought, I wonder what happened to his site? The site http://www.10gen.net/ is obviously still working, but http://www.jonsiruno.com/ is gone which borks 10gen.net. Looks as if he has to do something about his DNS.
Yeah, he got caught when Web Wide Media imploded (it’s a long story) and is currently working on getting his domain back.
